My Relocated Art Studio in Tennessee

Well I'm all set up now to start creating finally. Whew! Been a long time it seems since I've seriously worked at my art.  The little house we bought, is about 1/3 the size of my home we sold in Washington state, but I said I wanted to downsize, and so I did. A lot! Anyway, my craft room - it's smaller than my last one sort of. The other craft room had a whole wall which was just a sliding closet and to me that's just a waste of valuable wall space. This one has a big walk in closet, but with a regular door, and it's tucked into the corner of the room. Way better.

First thing I did with this new room is paint it my favorite Tuscan gold-yellow color. Just love it. So warm and welcoming. Then I pulled out the old carpet and bought some Allure vinyl plank flooring in Country Pine, which looks like old barn wood. Loved how it turned out! Next, I bought a bunch of bookcases (can't believe how hard those were to find here! No Ikea's anywhere to be found.) Once those were built and set up, I got to unpack all my craft boxes and start to organize.

I'm pretty pleased with it overall. The window in the room looks out onto my back pasture so I can see my wonderful horses grazing back there and can keep an eye on them. It's just so peaceful and inspiring to see them and nature all around.

So far I've done a couple of small paintings and am working on a sculpture as well. On top of that, I'm trying to find a full time job and work on home improvement as well, so there's a lot to keep me busy these days.

My best friend Ellen, (Bag II) of Macabre Webs, and I get together to craft about once a week or so. She does amazing Sculpy pieces and paints as well, so we get together and hoot it up and just have a blast! The other day we had a "Craftabagamania" as we call them. Two old bags getting together to craft and eat and shop! So fun!! She's been a huge help giving me a kick in the hiney to get creating.  I feel very creative in my new space and I see a lot of new By Way of Salem art ahead!

The Witch's Garden and Herb Growing 101

Herbs have been used in witchcraft for many a'moon. Not only for medicinal uses, spells and magik in general, but for cooking in the Witch's kitchen as well.

I envision a witch tending garden by moonlight, more than likely a full moon. Wandering between rows of hemlock and nightshade, plucking berries and pods from meandering vines, filling her basket to the brim, to be used in charm bags, oils, potions or other divine recipes.
Many of our most common herbs have healing and magical properties. Basil for instance neutralizes and repels negative energy. Sprinkle it in your doorway to ward off unwanted elements.

Peppermint also keeps away negativity but also encourages healing, warmth, love and serenity in your home.

Sesame seeds bring abundance and success. Sprinkle them anywhere you want prosperity. Consider them in a charm bag to carry with you to a job interview or to further your business ventures.
Lavender (one of my personal favorites) attracts positive energy and also repels the negative. The scent leaves you light hearted, calm and relaxed.
For an added boost to your home or surroundings, toss a pinch of your favorite herb into a candle flame and feel the magic!

The Hags of Le Mistral

Did you see the movie, "Chocolat"? Set in France, the characters Vianne Rocher and her young daughter move to a small Provencal town and open a chocolate shop. Do you remember when she is walking, wearing a red cape sheltering herself from the very strong winds? That is "le mistral", a very strong cold wind which blows from the north through Provence and the Rhone Valley.

The mistral, though harsh, also blows away the dust and makes the air particularly clear and that combination of air and light, inspired many impressionistic painters to the South of France. In France, they say the mistral brings with it good health and has played an important part in the life and culture of Provence from the beginning. The farmhouses there face south with their back to the mistral and the bell towers are usually open ironworks so that the wind can blow through them.  There are also "santons" or little saints which craftsman have sculpted for generations which depict these winds.

During my visit to Provence several years ago, we were fortunate enough to tour the studio of a very prominant santonnier. The craft is handed down from generation to generation. The figurines, comprised from Provencal village life, are placed in a creche, or nativity scene as we refer to them.

Inspired by these charming figurines, gave me the idea to sculpt some hags and witches from the old country, after all witches do indeed exist in France and are celebrated at the Bonnu en Sorcellerie every year. And being French myself, and loving Halloween as I do, it seemed so appropriate n'est-ce pas? Soon I will be presenting hags and witches of the Mistral!

Things That Go Bump...

Wanting to save the world from zombies, vampires, witches, or some other unsavory creature this Halloween? Well turn on and tune in to Halloween programming on TV this October! Maybe you'll learn a few tricks.

What's on this month? Let's take a look:

A new show this season called Grimm. It debuts on October 28th and I think it's based on Grimm's Fairytales. I saw the preview - looked like cops and trolls or something of that nature.

Next: Martha Stewart's Haunted House (Hallmark Channel) October 24th, 8 pm (E.T) No one does a holiday better than Martha! I know this will be a must-see for me - even if I have to DVR it and watch it the next day!

Making Monsters (Travel Channel) runs Sunday's through 10/23
It's about a Colorado based family who makes monsters and supplies them to haunted houses, theme parks, movies, etc... This could be fun!

I skipped over some others so make sure to check your local listings on your guide.

Here's the list of my top 4 Halloween favorites:

Jeepers Creepers - Still to this day, the creepiest horror flick I've ever seen.

Halloween - Yes, that same classic movie. From the spooky theme music to the cinematography. Dark, moody and creepy! No matter how many times I see it, I still get scared.

It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown! What more can I say about that. Candy corn sweetness. Awwwww...

Nightmare Before Christmas - It's Tim Burton for corn's sake! What's not to love?

October Happenings...

Hi gang!

Here we are in October already. I love Fall don't you? It's so beautiful. Normally here in WA, we've got a lot more of the Fall-look going on, but I think the strange weather of the earlier seasons has seriously confused Mother Nature, so it's not quite typical here right now.

What else is going on? Cosmetology school (Gene Juarez) is going really well for me. The first day out on the salon floor, I have to admit I wanted to quit! I was scared to death and just dreading taking my first guest. It's not that I don't know the stuff, but doing it on someone who can talk back? That's a whole other thing! My dear friend, Amalia, aka "Blake", who sat next to me in Design (cutting), and is next to me now on the floor, told me "J-nine, you need to calm down! You're freaking ME out and making ME nervous!" Honestly, I had no idea I was giving off that vibe. Well she was right. So for the next day and a half, I regrouped and just thought, ya know - this is IT. This is what you've been going to school for. Get it together girl! My next salon day, it was like I'd been doing it forever. And ya know what? I LOVE it!! Nothing scares me. I look forward to meeting my guests, and love the challenge of creating something new for someone and turning them into fabulous Divas! I've done haircuts, foils, colors, and each one has turned out great. Why? My attitude. I love what I do and so I think it comes out in how I do it. I love my guests too. They come in for a 5-star service and that's what they should get.

This month was also my birthday, October 2nd. And what a GREAT birthday I had! The girls at school surprised me first thing in the morning with a big balloon bouquet, flowers, cards, gifts, and lots of hugs and birthday wishes. They're not only my "support" with salon-life, but also dear friends.

For myself for my birthday? I bought P90X! I've seen what it can do for a body. And lordy - does it work! It's 13 extreme exercise videos that don't quit, including doing pull-ups. When was the last time YOU did a pull-up? I'm predicting I should be able to do ONE by October 2, 2011! Anyway, since my surgery last October, I've lost 25 lbs just from being off pain meds, staying away from most carbs and being more active. I thought it was time to give myself the gift of health and fitness. It's good for the mind as well, and for those of you who know me - well you know I need that! LOL!

Speaking of art and getting back to business. I'm working on an order for snowmen right now for a store back in Rhode Island. Obviously I haven't been doing a lot of creating because of my school schedule, and that'll still have to wait pretty much till I'm done. School demands and requirements get harder as you progress so I have to give that my full attention. I will try to create here and there as time allows, and I'll keep you all updated at least monthly on any news.

Happy Fall everyone!
Jeannine

Festival of the Witch - Bonnu, France

While doing some research on my own Halloween Hags, I came across a fascinating article about Halloween and witches in France. I found it so interesting because I just love going to France, I myself am French, I still have relatives over there, and I plan to go there many more times in the future and this village for sure will be on my "must visit" list! So...did you know that in many small villages there, witchcraft is very much alive? Mais oui!

The fete or festival, takes place in a small village called Bonnu. It's part of a larger village named Cuzion also known as Berry. Now, Bonnu itself is usually a very quiet place except for the 3rd Sunday in October when the Fete de la Sorcellerie takes place! And although it's in October, it has nothing to do with Halloween. It takes place because witchcraft is practiced in Berry. It is seen at the festival and in everyday life with the residents who live here.

The festival starts in the morning with a religious service offered to Saint Luc. The service is then followed by a procession of a wooden image of Saint Luc accompanied by a chorale. The festival goes on to last the whole day and the main theme of course is witchcraft and black magic. Fireworks are then held at the Chateau de Bonnu.

Besides witches, there are all sorts of devils and strange creatures parading along the streets. The "Gargouilles" are especially realistic and scary. And then of course you will find a gypsy or two in the streets reading tarot cards. In The House of the Witch you will find a beautiful exhibition about wolves, fairies, and other little magical creatures that live in the woods.

Sounds like a fantastical event to attend don't you think? Bien Sur!!!

Come to the Halloween Carnival!

Welcome to the Halloween Carnival!
UPDATE: This piece has been sold. Didn't make it to Etsy before someone snatched it up! Thank you!
Here is my long awaited canvas I've been working on for several months now. I had no idea when starting it, that it would take so long to complete but I'm glad I endured the process. I found I could only paint one section at a time while I had the "picture" in my head. As I got visions in my minds-eye, then I'd move on to the next section. There are 6 sections; each one depicting something Halloween-ish.

It's also a bit of a different type of painting that I've ever done too, as I incorporated elements of altered art (which I really enjoyed!), and different textures of papers, glitter, and painting techniques.

I've titled this piece "Halloween Carnival", as it reminds me of when I was a kid, the local park would put on a Halloween Carnival. Everywhere you'd look, there was something different and festive happening; costume parades, games, a haunted spook house, and either a play or puppet show. The air would be scented with the sweet smells of candy apples and cotton candy. Candy wrappers would be strewn on the ground serving as paths to the next booth.

I remember being so excited at all the Halloween festivities going on around me, overwhelmed at where to go first, meeting up with other neighborhood kids, trick or treat bags spilling as we'd make our way through the crowds ridding ourselves of our adult chaperones hurrying to catch up with us. Seems like just yesterday.....Hope you like it!

Thank Goodness it's Done!

Sheesh! I've finally updated my website. Got off the old stuff and added some new. Ok, it's not super exciting yet, but I'm workin' on it. I've at least made it all current; took off my any notion of the "dead weight" that I was totin' around so to speak, posted a few new pics, even a new post in "Bag's Corner". Yay! I'm headed in the right direction!

It really is a lot of work to keep up with everything. And with all this time that's past, I was very rusty on my HTML skills too. Still have to add a lot of my new items for sale on the website. That's going to take some work. Sort of easier to just keep it on the blog and on Etsy. Hmm......have to think about that one.. So if you have time, go take a peek, let me know what you think! http://bywayofsalem.com ~ Take care y'all!

Decorating with Halloween Collectibles

Did you know that decorating for Halloween is second only to Christmas decorating and the gap is rapidly closing? And although many vintage or antique Halloween pieces are both rare and expensive, that doesn't need to stop you from finding lots of fun stuff to collect and display!

In Washington state where I live, there's a little town called Sumner, that luckily for me, is right down my hill about 2 miles. It's a main street of little shops featuring folk art collectibles, antiques, Saltbox prims, and shabby chic. It is one of my favorite places to find pieces to add to my Halloween collection.
This summer while shopping at a small antique store, I stumbled upon an old candy tin shaped like a pumpkin which I picked up for a song. I'm always on the look-out! Right now, I'm finding that I really enjoy the handmade items lovingly created by other artists. I know the work that goes into each piece, so I try to buy them when I can to support my fellow artists.

When I bought my rustic black buffet to go with my old farm table, I realized it was the perfect place to display my Fall and Halloween collection all year long.
The top is decorated with bittersweet berries and papier mache pumpkin people

A Dan DiPaolo collectible, amongst candles, metal signs, crows, pumpkins and witch hats!

And don't forget about the porch!

Of Halloween and Snowmen

A Spooky Halloween night!

I've been less than crafty lately. Been waiting for Spring and of doing "Spring things"; planning my gardens, envisioning how they'll look this Spring and Summer when all the perennials come back, where I'll put the Coneflowers and Black Eyed Susan's, how many Zinnia plants to put in my rusted wheelbarrow, or should I put Lavender? Maybe some herbs too?

The wheelbarrow in my garden

And then of course there will be horse things to do. Lots of riding this time of year once the ground dries up a little. Here in Washington, Spring and Summer is the time we fellow equestrians wait for all rainy year to ride.

Which brings me in a rather round about way to Halloween and Snowmen. Two of my favorite things. I'm thinking ahead to future projects and where I'll focus most of my attention. What sold for me the best on Etsy and what buyers have been asking me for is what I'll make the most of. I'm going back to my roots so to speak. I love painting. And I especially love painting snowmen by Plum Purdy Designs. Oh sure, I have my own too, but Renee Mullin's provides some wonderful patterns and I think I'll go back to them for awhile. I've been painting them for years and I never tire of them. And snowmen ornament with twig arms. They make me happy.

A snowman paperweight and wooden sled I painted for a craft show last year

There are fleece angels to be sewn as well. With glittery wings and halos of gold stars. And many pumpkins to be painted, sculpted, and stitched. And witches to be sculpted with pointy noses and pointier chins!

Maybe if I start planning and making a list, I will actually begin to be more crafty. Better get started now!

Back to the Beginning - Halloween

I love Halloween! I know, it's very early yet in the year, but as I look at all the great Halloween art that's out there, especially stuff like retro postcards, it just reminds me of what made Halloween my favorite time of year as a child, and also some of the very special friends I had that couldn't help but contribute to my love of that very sacred night! I'd like to share some of those special memories with you, and maybe some of mine will bring back fond memories for you as well.

I grew up in Studio City, CA., a tiny suburb of Los Angeles, nestled in the San Fernando Valley. Down the end of the street from my family home is CBS Studios where a ton of the shows of those days were filmed, including The Munsters. I'd often see "Grandpa" Al Lewis walking home from the studio down Woodbridge Avenue - in make-up! Then just a block over lived Yvonne DeCarlo. How cool is that - Lily Munster! Her son, Michael Morgan, went to school with me at Dixie Canyon Elementary. I used to go over his house a lot as a child before I put 2+2 together who his mom was. How I found that out was one day I was waiting for my dad to pick me up from school, and I looked behind me and caught sight of a lady floating down the hallway wearing a shredded, tattered gossamer gown. She had pale white-green skin, and black and white striped hair. Of course I knew it was "Lily" in all her glory! A few minutes later, she comes walking along with my pal Michael in tow. Then I made the connection - mom! I mean, of course he told me his mom was Yvonne DeCarlo, but a 7 year old doesn't know "Lily's" real name. That was very cool making that discovery let me tell you! I mean who wouldn't want Lily Munster as your mom!?

Another of my childhood friends was Lisa Loring, who portrayed "Wednesday" on the Addams Family. She also went to Dixie Canyon. We were rivals for the same boyfriend, Toby. She could be a bit snotty at times, but mostly she was just a normal kid. I remember an outfit she wore once at school - in fact I'll never forget it, it was so "different". It was a clear heavy plastic see-through jumper trimmed with black binding that was worn over a red fabric under-dress. Quite bizarre. Leave it to her! Must have been a studio thing.

Also in this neighborhood is Universal Studios, and not too far off is NBC. Gee, guess that's why they call it Studio City! Lots of families who lived in this neck of the woods worked for one of the studios. Karen's dad worked for NBC, and my oldest brother was a sound man for CBS. Then he went on to produce and direct, and by the way, made Elvis' last movie - Elvis on Tour. Anyway, enough name-dropping.

My best friends: Rhonda and Karen lived right around the block from me. Rhonda's dad was a rabbi, and her mom stayed home when she wasn't helping at the temple. Karen's mom was also a stay-at-home (she scared me as a kid), and her dad worked for NBC as I mentioned. Rhonda had a pesky sister, and Karen had about 10! I'd go over most everyday and we'd ride bikes, play frisbee, Capture the Flag, or some Halloween board game like "Kabala" - the glow-in-the-dark fortune telling game. We'd sequester ourselves in the hallway and shut all the doors leading to it, so it'd be pitch black! Then we'd all sit around the glowing green plastic board asking the spinning ball questions about our future and have a screaming blast!!! On Saturday's, we'd sit around and watch "Chiller", or "Seymour" - scary movies on TV. Watch out for the Crawling Eye!!! Both Karen's family and mine had swimming pools so we'd alternate whose house we'd swim at in summer. I also was president of the now defunct "Born to be Wild" fan club! A sign of my future no doubt. Sometimes we'd sit on the curb in front of Nick Adams house waiting for him to come out. We didn't know who exactly he was, all we knew is that he was a movie star and played in "The Rebel". He lived about 5 houses from Rhonda. We never did see him come out. Later on I learned he died when I was about 11.

Yep Halloween was our favorite time of year. From my earliest recollections, I loved drawing and painting anything to do with pumpkins, witches or black cats. My first day of kindergarten, I remember out in our play yard, the wooden easels were set up with milk cartons full of orange, green, yellow and black paint. And huge sheets of paper hung off the easels with "stick figure pumpkins" on them. Oh how I loved them! I can still see them clearly. Can you?

I'd go to the library, another block away from my house, and check out every book on the subject of Halloween. Some were factual, just about the holiday and how it came to be, and some were fiction. My favorite was a book called "Spook". It was about a witch who was allergic to cats, but she had to have a familiar so she stole a little black dog named Spook. Really adorable.

Then there's the Halloween seasonal candy that came out about a month before. Remember the wax stuff? Lips, fangs, fingers, harmonicas, skeletons, mustaches, clown smiles with teeth? Or how about the tubes or skull heads filled with that colorful liquid of unknown origin that tasted like cheap Kool-aid? We had a store - another block away from our homes (we were centrally located weren't we!?), called Ringside Liquor. In California, you can buy liquor from a non-state run liquor store (unlike here in Washington). Anyway, we'd ride our Stingrays over to Ringside almost everyday for the season's best selection of WAX! And we'd load up too - sacks full of the nasty stuff. Then we'd start chomping and spitting. I don't know why they called it "gum" either. The stuff never stuck together! Sometimes it'd be all particle-like and so we'd spit that batch right out. Sometimes it'd bond together and we kept on chewing it then. So from the liquor store back to Rhonda's house, which was about 4 blocks, you'd see a trail of wax stuck to the aspalt in various shades of Halloween colors, or empty tubes of what had been liquid filled candy. Yeah, we littered back then. We were brats, what can I say.

There was also the Helm's Bakery truck. Remember those? He'd drive down the streets in our neighborhood blowing his whistle out of the panel trucks they drove back then. During Halloween season, he had donuts with orange and black sprinkles - our favorite!

We'd also ride our bikes up to the Sav-on Drug Store on Ventura Blvd. Now more movie trivia here - this area was featured in that 1980's classic movie, "Earthquake". Remember that? That whole area in Studio City was leveled in the movie. The bridge that kid was riding his bike on that went across the wash, or the L.A. Basin as it's really called, fell down too. I used to ride my bike across that everyday almost en route to somewhere. Scary to see it all collapse in a movie! Anyway, we'd go to Sav-on's to check out the Halloween costume aisle. We'd spend hours perusing the costumes, wigs, and assorted accessories.

Then when THE day finally arrived, and god forbid you were sick and couldn't go out Trick or Treating, we'd meet up; me, Rhonda, Karen and their pesky siblings, and traipse around the neighborhood. I'd always be wearing a chef uniform cause my dad was a chef. An easy costume for my mom to dress me in. We graduated from plastic pails to collect our candy in, to pillowcases, when we saw all the loot we were getting! The adults must've gotten wise cause once we started using them, we never seemed to get as much candy.

I'd like to be a kid again this Halloween. I'll buy some wax fangs, play some cheesy scary game, watch a classic horror flick, and toss empty candy skulls and chewed wax on my street. Hee hee!!!
